As we have continued to explore many winter related topics, snow and ice was of interest to the Kinders. Due to many days of extreme cold temperatures, we were unable to go outside so decided to bring the outside into our classroom! An invitation was presented to explore how ice melts and to determine what helped it melt the fastest! Collaboration, communication and problem solving was present in this exploration, and many students spend their entire play block at this space.

Students have discovered that salt helps to melt the ice. They are adding it a spoonful at a time and stirring it all together. At first, many discussions about whether it was salt or sugar took place, then finally M asked if she could taste it to solve the problem. After the smallest sample, she said she was wrong and in fact it was salt.
