The Kinders love creating stories and have wonderful imaginations. After feeling stuck and not completely happy with my math program, I began to explore how to combine storytelling with math and was able to see it in action during a site visit to another Kindergarten classroom. After modelling a story containing the skill or math concept I would like explored that day, the students set off to create their own stories. Many students have also enjoyed creating their own math games during this time.

B created a story about bears going into their homes to sleep. He used ten frames and five frames, with each square representing one house. After telling me that he had more bears than houses, he decided that two little bears were about the same size as one big bear, so he doubled them up to create more space. He counted the bears as he placed them down and again as he re arranged them throughout. “I have one in each square and it is full so there must be ten bears!”
