Due to some changes in our schedule, the practice math exam has been pushed to Monday, October 2, and the unit exam to Wednesday, October 4.
Today in class we assigned students to do a presentation in partners that is due the first day back after they complete their work experience. Students selected a topic from Chapter 2 of the textbook (Vikings, Cabot, Cartier, Champlain, Frobisher, Hudson) and are to become “experts” on their chosen topic so they can educate the class.
Presentations must include:
- Who they are?
- Where they are from?
- Where did they go (specifics)?
- Why did they come?
- What was life like before their contact with the First Nations people?
- What was life like after their contact with the First Nations people?
- What was the lasting impact of arrival in Canada?
- How were they received at the time?
- How does history view them?
Much of this information can be found in our textbook, but students may have to do some research on their own. Presentations will be done in class the first day back.
Have fun at work experience!
On Wednesday, Sept 27 the SRC has planned a pajama day! So wear your comfiest pajamas to school that day! And we have ANOTHER Spirit day on Friday, with the theme being sporting outfits. There will be activities in the gym at noon for students as well! Friday is also our Terry Fox Walk in the afternoon, so students should be prepared to go for a walk outside.
In ELA 9/10 we are currently in the midst of our first unit focusing on Folktales. We’ve read a bunch of different folk and fairy tales, and have worked on analyzing the story components. On Tuesday, Sept 26 we have a 1-2 page essay due. In this essay students should compare and contrast two tricksters that we read about in class last week: Wisakedjak and the Raven.
In 4/5 art we are currently doing our pop culture art unit! We started out by making self portraits in the style of Minecraft characters and are working on finishing up our own versions of the Mona Lisa. They’re looking really cool so far! Some of us have also made bookmarks, and we have all created our own art portfolios where we keep our projects.
We have an upcoming unit exam for both grade 7 and 8 math classes! In preparation for this students have been working on review assignments for Unit 2 (Integers). We will also have a practice test on Friday, Sept 29 to help us to get ready! Our unit exam will be on Tuesday, October 3rd.
In grade 4/5 social studies we have been learning about different ways to view our world. We have explored using Google Earth and it is really cool! We have also drawn a map of Colonsay and worked with maps of the world.
Phys ed 20/30 will have their volleyball unit exam on Thursday, Sept 28. Students should refer to the handout given at the beginning of this unit for information on what to study. If you have lost your handout you can click on Volleyball Handout to view the information.
I’m looking forward to meeting all of my new students later today! We are starting the morning off with a whole school assembly, and hopefully everyone enjoys the activities that the SRC has organized for us!
