Division Hub Class – Grade 6 Open House – June 6th

Congrats to our West Music Program on their fantastic concert last night and thanks to the East students that made the trip to Martensville.

Grade 6 – Division Hub Open House

All current Grade 6’s are invited to come join and experience the final Division Hub Classes of the year on June 6th at Allan School.

Following the completion of the grade 5/6 instrumental portion of their K-9 music education, students are invited to continue on their instruments through joining the 7-12 music education classes at their homeschool and/or Division Rehearsals bi-weekly (weds) at Allan school. ALL students will however continue the music portion of Arts education to completion with their homeroom teacher or other in grades 7-9.

  • 12pm – Students are bussed from their home school with the seniors to Allan

  • 1:45pm – Break out activities – students will rotate to experience all ensembles offered at Division Classes (see page 2 for more details)                  
  • 3:15 Bowling and Pizza at Allan Bowl – Kindly donated by the Band Parents Association
  • 5:00pm Depart

Concert Thanks and upcoming events

What a great evening! Thanks to everyone for a fantastic concert and congratulations to the Grade 5/6 Music students, RhythmBox, Senior Winds and special guests Stone Frigate Big Band. Pictures to follow.

  • Anyone that wants an encore is welcome at the West Division Concert at Martensville Highschool this coming Wednesday at 7pm.

Help with 5/6’s needed – Bus times for Spring Concert tomorrow

The Spring concert is just 31 hours away!

We desperately still need parents to help supervise the grade 5/6 students before the concert (while other groups rehearse) and at the start directing 5/6 to seats. Please let me know if you can help. 

Please see the bus times to take students to Clavet for tomorrows concert. Remember to bring concert dress (Black pants/skirt, white top/blouse/dress shirt, Black smart shoes) and supper to eat at Clavet.

Week Ahead Notes: No In-Division Tour

Hope you are enjoying the long weekend.

Just over a week until our Spring Concert in Clavet.

Grade 5/6 should be working on:     Jester Dance, Dr. Rock, Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 (solid state and first blues)

There is no In-Division tour this coming week May 24th/25th. There is Division rehearsal at Allan on the 23rd However.

All Senior Students from East and West are invited to attend both concerts the following week May 28th at Clavet School and May 30th at Martensville High School. East Students will be bussed to Clavet but will need to arrange transportation to Martensville.

Spring Concert: May 28th at Clavet School (Old Gym) 7pm start.

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

The Spring concert is just around the corner, please see the information below and we look forward to seeing you there!

Where: Clavet School  (Site 510, Box 15, RR5, Saskatoon, SK S7K 3J8)

When:  All students will be picked up after school and taken directly to Clavet school so we can have a quick on stage rehearsal and get everything set up beforehand. Remember to bring a packed supper and concert dress!

  • Bus 1: Colonsay, Allan
  • Bus 2: Aberdeen
  • Bus 3: Hanley, Dundurn and SCP

What:

  • Grade 5/6: Lesson 1 (all), Lesson 2 (First Blues/Solid State), Jester Dance, Dr. Rock

  • Division Band: Critical Mass, Rippling Watercolors, Arabian Dance, (Turkish March)

Other

  • Doors to the concert hall will open at 6:30PM and there will be drinks in the lobby beforehand.
  • Special Guests: Stone Frigate Big Band are performing as guest artists.
  • Students will NOT be bussed back to their schools. Parents need to pick them up after and drive them home.

Parent Volunteer Request

  • We urgently need parent volunteers to help supervise rooms before the concert starts. If you are available, please email Mr. Martin or Mr. Thompson.

Senior (grade 7-12) retreat this Thursday

Congratulations to the spectacular grade 5’s and 6’s that took part in the Music Monday Beginner retreat in Allan this past Monday and thanks to our wonderful clinicians that worked with the students.

Tomorrow is Division Rehearsal in Allan but also this coming Thursday all senior students will travel to the University of Saskatchewan to have a fantastic day of workshops and fun with University of Saskatchewan faculty members. Parents are welcome.

Students need to be dropped at the University of Saskatchewan Education Building (28 Campus Dr, Saskatoon, SK S7N 0X1) for 8:30am and picked up from Prairie Jurassic (618 Cynthia St, Saskatoon, SK S7L 6A2) at 6pm.

Students will be working with three fantastic clinicians throughout the day and rounding it off with Laser tag at Prairie Jurassic. There is no cost for this day (activity paid for through band fees) but students need to arrange car pooling or transport to and from the day and bring a packed lunch. Students need clean runners/Grip socks for laser tag.

Guest Clinicians

Paul Suchan   (Conductor for full band, Composition session)

With works described as engaging, diverse and profound, Canadian composer, performer and music educator Paul Suchan has been performed by many of Canada’s leading ensembles including the McGill Wind Symphony, Regina Symphony Orchestra, Universite de Montreal Big Band and the National Youth Band of Canada. In December 2011, at the age of only 28, Mr. Suchan’s ninety minute opera, The Beast in the Jungle, was performed in Montreal with orchestra under the baton of the composer. In 2014 Mr. Suchan was awarded first place in the Canadian Band Association Composition Competition for his piece Swiftriver Passage.

In addition to Mr. Suchan’s collaborative work with community and high school groups, he is the Co-founder and current Co-Artistic Director of the Sask New Music Festival, an annual 3-day festival that features Saskatchewan and prairie composers. He is in demand as a performer, conductor and clinician and has taught at both the secondary and post secondary level. He performs regularly on saxophone and piano with many different ensembles, including his jazz trio, PFM.

Mr. Suchan is from Saskatoon, where he graduated with a B. Mus/B.Mus Ed (2007) from the University of Saskatchewan. He furthered his studies at the Universite de Montreal with a M.Mus in Composition (2012) with composer Alan Belkin. He is currently based in Montreal where he lives with his wife Naomi.

Dr. Jennifer Lang – Vocal (Song Sessional)

Dr. Jennifer Lang is currently an Assistant Professor of Music Education at the University of Saskatchewan where she directs the Greystone Singers and the University Chorus.

While completing her graduate studies at the University of Western Ontario, Jennifer instructed advanced choral techniques and music education courses at the Don Wright Faculty of Music and Faculty of Education.  In addition to serving as Program Coordinator for Musical Futures Canada, she was an instructor in the Teaching Support Centre, director of the UWO Choir and a conductor within the Amabile Boy’s and Men’s choirs of London, ON.

Prior to completing her doctorate, Jennifer served as a program leader of vocal and instrumental secondary school music with the District of Niagara Arts Academy in the District School Board of Niagara.

Darrell Bueckert – Percussion (RhythmBox sessional)

Darrell is a graduate of the University of Manitoba (B.A.) and the University of Saskatchewan (B.Mus. Mus.Ed. and M.Ed. in instrumental music). He has performed with many professional organizations including both the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra where he is now Principal Timpanist.

Darrell has also been a founding member of several percussion ensembles which have performed throughout Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories for schools and communities. Darrell was an itinerant band teacher in the Saskatchewan Valley School Division and is now on faculty with the Department of Music at the University of Saskatchewan as Applied Percussion Instructor and Sessional Lecturer in Music Education. From 2006-2009 Darrell was also Adjunct Professor to the College of Graduate Studies and Research at the University of Regina.
