Raiders Strike Gold

The Waldheim Raiders senior girls volleyball team has won the 3A Provincial Championship! The ladies mowed down the competition, going undefeated in the round robin play. In the lid lifter, the girls showed the field what was to come as they took down Kinistino in two straight. This match was followed up with wins over Kipling and Rocanville as the girls finished Friday a perfect 3 – 0. On Saturday the girls started their magical day with a 2 – 0 win over Wynyard, this put the Raiders in top spot in their pool.

In the playoffs the girls faced Naicam in the quarterfinals, winning that match 2 – 0, setting up a match with Kinistino in the semifinals. The girls would finally experience some adversity as Kinistino grabbed the first set 25-19, putting the girls in an 0-1 hole. The girls battled back, taking set two 25-12, before advancing to the finals thanks to a 15-1 rout in set three.

In the finals the Raiders were up against a tough team from Oxbow, however the ladies held a slight psychological advantage as they had recently won Oxbow’s invitational tournament. Oxbow fell behind after losing set one, but showed they would not go quietly as they took set two 25-22 to set up a winner takes all final set. The girls would not be denied as they completed their quest, defeating Oxbow 15-7 and capturing 3A provincial gold.

The 2016 senior girls now join a rich heritage of provincial champions from Waldheim School. A very special thank you to the coaching staff and parent volunteers, a program like this requires a lot of work behind the scenes. Congratulations to the girls who demonstrated class throughout the entire season, maintained their strong academic standing, and showed a commitment to teamwork.

You are the champions!
