Welcome to March!

Welcome to March!

I am hopeful that we are done with the frigid temperatures – will I jinx it if I get my winter tires off now??

You may have heard through the grapevine that I am expecting my second child soon.  I’m happy to announce that Deane Martin Gray and Kevin Cumming will take over acting Principal and Vice Principal duties (respectively) from May 21 – June 29, 2021.  We will know who will be in these positions from Sept 2021 – late January 2022 (when I plan to return) in late April when division wide admin staffing becomes known.  I have certainly enjoyed having the kids at ACS offer names for this little one – my own son currently wants to name the new one “stapler” so I’m grateful that the ACS kids have some better ideas!

You will have received an email from us related to student involved conferences and some of the parent learning opportunities that will be available on March 16th and 17th.   Please contact the office if you have questions about these days – we’re looking forward to visiting with you!

Our SLT has been able to prepare a few events for our student body including Candy Grams and Bingo most recently in February.  They are planning an egg hunt for K-6 students and an escape room activity for 7-12 students later in March.  These kids are doing a great job of seeking out fun and safe things to brighten our school days.  We also have a dedicated group of Grade 7 students who have taken on yearbook responsibilities for the 2020-2021 book – this will likely be ready for ordering in September 2021.

At our most recent SCC meeting, parents received updates on our school goal (“How does family engagement impact student learning?) and some of the professional development that teachers are engaged in.  I also shared a draft version of a new awards program we are working on and received some valuable feedback – if you’d like to provide some feedback on this draft plan, please let me know and I’ll happily send it your way.  Please continue to send in any family photos you’d like to contribute to our “Family” bulletin board and post pictures of your family learning together (learning anything, anywhere!) on social media using the #acsfamilylearns.

Many of our Grade 12 graduates and parents are patiently waiting to hear about our plans for a celebration this year.   We are trying to find the “sweet spot” for making plans – we need to wait long enough that our plans are relevant and comply with public health orders and we need to give ourselves enough time to plan the event.  Recent announcements from Premier Moe suggest that we may see an easing of restrictions in the coming weeks, so we are planning to wait until after the Easter break to communicate a tentative plan for a graduation ceremony.  We know that there will be frustration with this – please know we are doing our best to plan the best event possible, given the circumstances we are operating under.

Reminder that there is no school for students on March 8th (prep/PD day)  and March 19th (day off in lieu of parent teacher conferences).

Thank you for all you are doing to make this school year a success. Happy spring!
