October1st-5th

Looking ahead at our week! Today we had a great day of self reflection. The students completed several self- assessments in regards to their learning behaviors, as well as reflecting on their school community entitled, All About Me At School. They also completed their selfie profiles  for their portfolios. Today we listened to a story, Shi-Shi-Etko ,and shared our thoughts during the reading of the book. The ideas that were generated were amazing. We indeed have great thinkers in this class.

Today we were able to enjoy our new pods. New pod-mates, new places to sit in the classroom, and a new classroom formation with groups that can all work together to achieve the same goal.

We have Parent Student Teacher Interviews on Tuesday and Thursday this week . Please refer to the note I sent home with your child. It is very important that your child is present for the interviews as their learning will be our topic of conversation. Thank-you to everyone that has signed up. I`m looking forward to seeing you at interviews.

Math test on Patterns will be on Thursday, Oct.4th. The students have been improving on their pattern language as well as being able to display their own patterns and explain them in their own words.

We are looking forward to watching the grade 8`s share their drama production with us tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct.2nd.We will have an early recess, and then enjoy the entertainment provided by the Grade 8`s.

Sept.25th/26th

We have been busy in 3P these last two days learning about residential schools. All students will be given a chance to share their wonderings, questions, thoughts, connections before our readings in relation to two books; WHEN I WAS EIGHT, and SHI-SHI- ETKO. These books are closely connected with Orange Shirt Day.  In Math, we learned about input/output machines with patterns and the lesson was very visual and interactive with great participation from the class. We learned about short and long vowel sounds today in our Word Study.  Our daily routines are very important to us. In Science we learned all about the characteristics of Structures and we were able to share our learnings with a partner. We were very active in Gym today, focusing on team work in soccer, and aiming to hit a target in groups. The teams were very eager and energetic in our cone soccer ball activity.  It was great to see the wonderful “buckets” decorated by each student in our classroom family. They are all very unique and represent characteristics of whom they are. We are a “BUCKET FILLING” classroom, and once again our bucket will be filled with a bucket filling message from one of our classmates on Friday. We will be creating a clothesline of ORANGE T-SHIRTS(cut outs) and writing a message about “All Children Matter”. Orange Short Day is Friday, Sept.28th.

This week we have “Orange Shirt Day”on Friday so we are learning all about what it represents and how we will be participating in this day on Friday, Sept.28th. We are asking all students to wear Orange if they have; and for those that do not we will have another way of recognizing their participation in Orange Shirt Day.

We also have the Family BBQ, hosted by the SCC, on Thursday, Sept.27th from 5:00-6:30pm. We plan to have the bbq located in the front of the school. Thank-you to all of you that brought back your forms. And thank-you to our SCC for organizing this.

Thursday, Sept.20th- Looking Ahead

Thank-you to all of you for being consistent with the signing of the day planner. This is a great communication tool between home and school. I really appreciate the time you take to read your child’s message for the day and then sign your signature. Today was an exciting day as we got to meet our care partners in 5K for the first time and complete a leaf art activity. We enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors, as well as the beauty of the Fall colors. We also read the “LEAF MAN” and brainstormed what Fall reminds us of. I shared my story of peacefulness by the river , taking my puppy for a walk and smelling the clean fresh air, and the colors of orange , red, and yellow. The students created some amazing pieces of Art work.

Our first three weeks of grade 3 have been all about practicing our daily  routines, getting to know one another, sharing and caring for each other and beginning our first units in all of our subjects. We are a “BUCKET FILLING CLASSROOM” and on Fridays we participate in BUCKET FILLING FRIDAY. Please take the time to ask your child about characteristics of a “bucket filler”. I’m excited to see the energy, happiness, and excitement in the classroom tomorrow as we all dip in to our buckets and read our messages this week.

I will be sending home a package of information in regards to what I have observed from our learners in grade 3 thus far, what we are learning in all of our subject areas, upcoming events, and just a general statement about the avenues of communication that are available. Please look for this package on Monday, Sept.24th. Each student will be given one to bring home to share with you.

Reminder to send in your SCC note for the family B-BQ on Thursday, Sept.27th if you would like to attend.

Every student packed at least one book in their backpack to take home and read. I will be sending a reading inventory sheet home with your child on Wednesday, Sept.12th. It would be helpful  if you could complete the reading inventory sheet with your child and send it back to school with him/her. As we all know, reading is very important.

The students were able to write down 2 points about how to ,”JUST PICK THE RIGHT BOOK.” We have library on Tuesday so I`m excited to see which books the students choose. In Science we are beginning the year with learning about structures. WOW….we did a little building activity today in groups and I have many little eager builders that like to problem solve.
