June 2011 Grade 1&2 News

The countdown until summer holidays is on…only two weeks to go! We are continuing to work hard finishing up our units for this year. The grade one’s have been learning about addition and subtraction to twenty with Mr. Woods-Fehr, while the grade two’s have been learning about addition and subtraction to one hundred with me. We have lots going on with science! As a class, we are learning about magnets. The grade two’s are also working on a research project learning about various habitats with Mrs. Harder. Once their reports and diorama’s are complete, they will teach their habitat to the grade one’s. Meanwhile, the one’s have finished a short unit on movement and are learning about plant growth. In health, we continue to learn about the food groups and are beginning to learn about our bodies and making healthy choices. In social studies, we will be talking about decision making within our families, the school, and in our community. Our Flat Stanley’s have almost all arrived as well! We can hardly wait to open them once they all return to school and learn about the communities that they visited. In ELA, we have finished our guided reading centers, printing, sight words, and spelling for the year. We will continue to work on reading, writing, and phonics skills for the next couple of weeks. It’s been a wonderful year with this class. Thank you to all parents for your support and assistance throughout the year. I hope everyone has a fun filled, relaxing, safe summer!

May 2011 Grade 1&2 News

With only a month and a half left of school, we’re starting to gear down to summer holidays! Mr. Woods-Fehr will be teaching the grade one math until the end of the year, while I teach the grade two’s. Mr. Woods-Fehr decided to leave the geometry unit until June and has been focusing on addition and subtraction to twenty. The grade two’s just finished their unit on geometry, identifying 2-D shapes and 3-D objects. We are now starting to add and subtract to one hundred! In ELA, we are finished learning about Fairy Tales and are moving onto Poetry, where we will read and write a variety of poems. We are finishing blends and moving onto digraphs in phonics and continue with story writing in creative writing. I hope to wrap spelling up near the beginning of June, so please keep practicing just a little longer! We are learning about the food groups and making healthy choices in heath class. We also have lot’s going on in science as well. The grade two’s are working on an inquiry based research project on habitats with our teacher librarian, Mrs. Harder. Once they are done this project, they will teach the rest of the class about their habitat. It should be fun! Meanwhile, the grade ones are learning about motion and will soon learn about plants. As a class, we are also beginning a unit on magnets. Thank you for sending the addresses for our Flat Stanley project. We anxiously await the arrival of our flat people after their worldly adventures!

April 2011 Grade 1&2 News

Wow, Easter is already here! Thanks to all of the parents who sent egg shells for our spring art project that we will complete after the break. We are sailing along in math. The grade ones have just finished learning about numbers to one hundred, while the grade two’s finished off their unit on measurement. Both grades are now beginning to learn about geometry. Please continue to practice mental math skills at home, as we will soon be continuing to add and subtract with larger numbers. In science, we are learning about magnets, in health we are learning about the food groups, our body, and making healthy choices, and in social studies we are reviewing how to help the environment in preparation for Earth Day. We are completing gymnastics in Phys. Ed. and will be moving on to skipping after the break. In ELA, we are delving deeper into blends and digraphs and are working on story writing, focusing on the beginning, middle, and end of a story. Have a wonderful and safe Easter holiday!

March 2011 Grade 1&2

Thank you to all parents and students for being so accommodating and coming in early for your interviews! I really enjoyed the student led parent-teacher interview, and think that it put an interesting spin on the whole process! Just a reminder to dress appropriately for the Winter Carnival on Friday….layers are probably a good idea.

Not much has changed in our class since the last newsletter! The grade one’s are wrapping up their math unit on measurement and will soon begin learning about numbers to one hundred. The grade two’s are nearing the end of their very long unit on addition and subtraction to eighteen, and are moving on to measurement. The students are really enjoying our ELA centers, where they move from different stations each day. Some of the stations include guided reading, independent or buddy reading, computers, phonics, listening stations, spelling, and so forth. We are also learning about different strategies in our Fairy Tale unit, such as sequencing, blends and digraphs, antonyms and synonyms, and word families. We have also started some creative writing, where we are using our imaginations to write own stories. We are almost done are dinosaur unit in science, and are still working on a healthy body in health and gymnastics in Phys. Ed.
