Grade 4 & 5 News

Year-end already?! Time flies when you’re working hard and having fun! The 4/5s have wrapped up our Cana- dian studies and Simple Ma- chines units and are finishing up novel study final projects – the creativity is inspiring! We’ve had a lot of fun this month and more scheduled: Children’s Festival, Track & Field Day, Class Swimming Party, Try-all-athon and Elementary Spray Park Party keep us playing, as well as working. We are also very grateful to Mrs. Burgess who organized a special trip to the town library so we could get library cards and get started on summer reading. I have had a wonderful time with this class of intelligent, insightful and very witty kids! Life is leading me away from Hanley next year (all the way to Ontario) so I’d like to thank all the students and staff at Hanley School for being so welcoming and supportive. This is truly a wonderful community. Lastly, thanks for being such a great class, Grade 4/5, and good luck in 5/6 – I know you’ll ace it! Have a wonderful summer!

Grade 4 & 5 News

The Grade 4/5 class has just written their first test on the Canadian Government. Next up is learning about the House of Commons and Provincial Parliament, as well as First Nations government. They are also creating marvellous art works inspired by Saskatchewan artist, Kevin Pee-ace and wow, are they great! Things are getting creepy in our Coraline novel study, and very emotional in our poetry exploration reading Love That Dog. The students are also showing amazing creativity by building their home-made musical instruments for our Sound unit finale in Science. They sure are showing some great ingenuity!

We in Grade 4/5 are all look- ing forward to spring finally arriving, and hope that you are enjoying the weather as it slowly warms up. We defi- nitely are! The Grade 4/5 class have begun studying a few new topics this month. We are learning about the three levels of Canadian government in Social Studies. In ELA, we continue to practice our language skills and we are exploring poetry. We have also started our novel study of Coraline. In Science we are exploring the exciting world of SOUND! So far we have made homemade kazoos to learn about sound waves and learned about pitch using the strings of a violin, and there are many more exciting activities ahead! We are also learning about eating well in Health. The Grade 4s are doing very well on their Fractions & Decimals unit so far. I continue to be blown away by the great ideas and unending creativity of these students! Finally, we would like to CONGRATULATION Mrs. Pozniak, on the safe and happy arrival of her baby boy, Kade! We can’t wait to see more pictures.

Grade 4 & 5 News

The grade 4/5 students have been enjoying all the snow at breaks and playing on the hill. Writer’s workshop has been a big focus for their work in ELA and the parts of the Human body including the various systems has been the focus the last few weeks in Science. In Grade 5 math, multiplication and division are the current topics and in Grade 4 Area is the topic we’re finishing up with our test today. We continue to learn about the pioneers in Social Studies. To raise money for our  coming field trip next month, we’re holding a Dirt and Worms sale (chocolate pudding and gummy worms) at noon on March 1st. Mmmm, sounds yummy!

Grade 4 & 5 News

The Grade 4/5’s have started a very exciting journey into our very first Writer’s Workshop! We are excited about this process and look forward to sharing some of our published work with you in the near future! We had the opportunity to meet Canadian Author, Eric Wilson, on January 10th in Dundurn and this sparked even more interest in the writing process. We continue to learn about the Human Body in Science and our own province of Saskatchewan in Social Studies. Math is keeping us busy as usual with learning to tell time and division! Report cards are right around the corner (early March) so let’s be sure to continue working on the goals we set back in the fall!

It has once again been a busy month in the 4/5 classroom. We just finished up our novel study – How to Eat Fried Worms and created some fantastic responses and dioramas to wrap it up! We had the chance to create some beautiful art over the last few weeks and would like to thank anyone who purchased our pieces at the Christmas Family Fun Festival! We are all looking forward to the break and will be excited to come back and share some of our stories in January!

Well it appears as if Winter has officially arrived! We have been reading the novel How to Eat Fried Worms and I am thankful that I have not heard any stories about my students attempting to eat worms! In Social Studies, we just wrapped up our Saskatchewan Heroes Unit and the students created wonderful power point presentations to showcase their hero. We will be starting out new Science Unit on the Human Body very shortly and will soon be studying Christmas Around the World in December. These first few months have seemed to fly by and I am sure the next few will also! Enjoy the snow!

We are back! I hope everyone had a fantastic summer and is ready to jump into a new year of school! Our class has been a bit chaotic lately with the tables we ordered not in yet, but by Monday we will back to a normal routine and will be so lucky to have the opportunity to have tables rather than desks in our classroom! We will be focusing on cooperative learning, and the tables are sure to enhance this for us! We will be covering many exciting topics this year and I can’t wait to get to know my old and new students even better! Looking forward to another great year!

Here it is…. Well, another school year has come and gone! We had a fantastic year together in our class. With our year end trip to Batoche and a few other year end parties we are able to celebrate the successes we had together this school year. I could not be more proud of a group of students and what they accomplished in 10 months. Continue to be thinkers, and never stop asking questions! I look forward to seeing you continue your successes at Hanley School. Have a great summer!!
