Dear French Immersion families:

We are so proud of our strong and dynamic French Immersion program in Prairie Spirit School Division and we are glad you are a part of that with us! The purpose of this communication is to inform our French Immersion parents of a substantial and exciting change for the 2020/21 school year, which will ensure the growth and expansion of the French Immersion program.

As you know, our French Immersion program is designed to add a grade every year. In order to plan for the long-term growth of our French Immersion program, the program will be moved to Warman Elementary School (WES), starting this fall. This decision was made by the Board of Education at its regular meeting on Monday, April 20, 2020. École Traditions Elementary School (ÉTES) is at its maximum enrolment capacity and cannot accommodate the continued growth of the French Immersion program. In preparation for the school’s growing enrolment, the Division applied for additional relocatable classrooms to be added to ÉTES both last year and this year. We recently learned that our application for 2020/21 was not approved. According to Ministry policy, relocatable classrooms are not provided for a school when there is classroom space available in the community. Therefore, additional classroom space was not provided for ÉTES because classroom space is available in the community at WES. We do not believe it is an effective use of limited resources to renovate spaces at ÉTES that were not intended for classrooms to create temporary French Immersion classrooms. This approach does not support our long-term vision for the French Immersion program. Moving the program now reflects Prairie Spirit’s commitment to a sustainable and growing French Immersion program into the future. As we continue to add another grade level to the program, the move to WES will allow the program to grow and develop.

Our French Immersion teachers will continue to provide excellent programming at Warman Elementary this fall. In addition, Mrs. Danielle Olson, currently the Vice Principal at École Traditions, will become the Principal of Warman Elementary School. Mrs. Nicole Lacoursiere will continue in her current role as Vice Principal at WES. Mr. Greg Tebay will become the Principal of École Traditions Elementary School and Mr. Daniel Howie will be the new Vice Principal. – 2 – We are excited about these plans that will ensure the growth and expansion of the French Immersion program.

We know this change will have a significant impact on your child and on your family and we will do all we can to support you in making the move to Warman Elementary School. We plan to provide more information in the upcoming weeks, including details about transportation.

Please send any questions to: contact@spiritsd.ca.

Sincerely, Lori Jeschke
