Grade 10 News

Final exams are almost here! For the grade 10’s this is their first set of exams of many to come. I almost feel bad for them – almost. In Math, they’ve just finished up a unit on Geometry and are now studying furiously for their final. In ELA, students have been reading poetry and reading for understanding. In Wildlife Management, they’ve finished aquatic systems and have been watching some animal documentaries. In Wellness, they’ve been fitness testing, which goes well with the unit on Motion in Science. The IA students are carefully putting the finishing touches on their projects and in Commercial
Cooking, they’re prepping for their last meal. How appropriate right before finals! Good luck! (Thanks to Steffen for his help!)

Grade 9 News

The New Year is upon us and we can hardly imagine a more exciting start. Frigid temperatures, wind storms and icy roads all make our daily commute to school an adventure. When we get here though, it’s always worth it. Where else can a kid learn about polynomials, human reproduction and child soldiers all in one day? The Human Development Index (HDI) is the standard by which countries are considered developed or developing. We’re learning about this in Social Studies and we’re also learning that Canada is a pretty terrific place to live. It’s not perfect, but by golly, it’s
the best out there. In Careers/Health we’ve started playing the stock market. Wild fun. One hundred thousand dollars (pretend money) is what we start with and we’ll see where it goes. If you have any hot stock tips, please pass them on.

The grade 5/6 class is sure enjoying the break in the cold weather. We are currently working on independent novel studies as well as a Flight unit in ELA. In Math the grade 6’s are working on a Geometry unit. The grade 5’s are finishing our multiplication and division unit and will begin measurement next week. Grade 3 & 4 News

The 3/4 class is working hard in the new year! In Reader’s Workshop we are focusing on building stamina when reading longer and more difficult books. Our spelling test lists are being based on words the students ask how to spell during class. In math the grade 3s are doing an addition and subtraction unit, while the 4s are learning about measurement and telling time. The Sochi Olympics are just around the corner, so in Social Studies and Health we have been learning about past Canadian athletes and their sports. The students worked in groups to create obstacle courses in gym and they reflected on who gives them courage by creating a courage quilt. In Science we are studying forces that repel and attract and in gym we are learning basketball skills. I hope everyone has a wonderful 2014! It’s great to be back with this group!

Grade 1 & 2 News

For those of you that I have never met, I would like to introduce myself! My name is Janet Adelman and I am currently covering Stacey Romanchuk’s maternity leave. I am so excited to be working with this Grade 1/2 class for the rest of the 2014 school

Here are a few things we are currently working on at school. In Math, the Grade 1’s have started a new unit on measurement and they are comparing and ordering lengths and comparing area, capacities and masses. The Grade 2’s finished up their unit on Adding and Subtracting to 18 and are now working on geometry! We are
learning lots about all sorts of different shapes. In ELA, our class has been doing more work with centers and we have recently added a listening center. Soon we will be starting an author study on Robert Munsch with Ms. Burgess in the library. In Science we have been learning about different animals and which animal group they belong to (Mammals, Reptiles, Amphibians, Birds, Fish, Insects or other). Feel free to test your child at home to see what they have learned. Social has got our class learning about different kinds of maps and soon we will be learning about our community. In Art we have been experimenting with water colour paint and pastels and in Health we are learning about how to keep ourselves healthy!

We have been very busy in the two weeks back from the break but we have been having a lot of fun! I have thoroughly enjoyed the past two weeks with this class and I am looking forward to what the rest of this year has to bring! Always feel free to contact me any time about any questions, concerns or anything!

Grade 1 & 2 News

Wow, what a busy time of year! We are in the middle of wrapping up several units and beginning new ones. The grade ones are starting a unit on adding and subtracting to twelve with Mr. Woods-Fehr, while the grade two’s are starting a unit on adding and subtracting to eighteen with me. In Language Arts, the grade ones have finally finished their review of the alphabet letters and sounds, and are starting spelling. Their first spelling test will be this Friday.

We are also currently working on a nursery rhymes unit for the month of November. We have been making connections to what we are reading and are starting to answer the 5 W’s (who, what, when, where, and why) as we read stories. These are both great strategies to discuss with your child as you read stories at home as well. We are continuing to work on sentence structure in writing and will soon write letters to Santa! Our guided reading centers are going

well and the students seem to enjoy rotating through various activities during this time. We are just wrapping up our units in science, social studies, and health. Our new units that we will begin are on animals for science, communities of the past for social studies, as well as making healthy choices for health.

Grade 3 & 4 News

Another month has passed us by and we are getting closer to Christmas. This past month, the class enjoyed a fun Halloween party put on for us by a few Grade 12 Home Ec. students. Thank you, Chris, Ryan and Jesse! Everyone looked great in their costumes! Report cards have been sent out and congratulations to students on their hard work so far! We are getting into the Christmas season and practices for our Christmas concert will be starting this week so there are plenty of things to keep us busy.

Here are some of the things we have been doing this past month in our subject areas. In ELA, we are soon wrapping up our Friendship unit. We also took a break from our unit to write some creative stories. The students did a great job of coming up with ideas for each of their stories and as well as creating an illustrated picture book version of it! They are all excited to bring them home after they have been shared with our class. In Math, the grade 3’s continue to look at numbers between 1 and 1000 and the grade 4’s just finished a unit test on numbers. Both groups are doing some work on the computers with IXL math. If you can get a chance to help your child work on some extra skills at home that would be great! Our Science unit on Structures and Materials is soon wrapping up and we will be having a test at the end of this week or early next week. Our Social class continues to research and learn all about Saskatchewan. In Arts Ed., the students just finished a Pointillism project and they are very excited to bring them home, along with some other art projects that will also be coming home soon!

I sent out a parent email last week in regards to our new behaviour reporting system we are using for our class. I would like to thank everyone for all the positive responses and support given. Please continue to make an effort to review the report with your child each night and send it back signed so that we can continue to communicate with each other. Again, never hesitate to contact me anytime! Thanks,

Janet Adelman Grade 3/4 Teacher
