Saber Football News

The Hanley Saber Football team had another exceptional season this fall finishing the year with an 8 win 1 loss record, losing in a barn-burner of a provincial semi-final game 74-64 to a talented Lemberg team. The Sabers would like to again thank the communities of Hanley, Dundurn and surrounding areas for the incredible support that was demonstrated throughout the season.

The team would like to congratulate our graduating players on their success this year and thank them for their contributions to the club over their years with the team. They are: Dion, Michael, John, Jae, Joel, Kody, and Kirk.

We would like to thank everyone who helped with the upgrades to the field this year – the completed clubhouse and new bleachers and scoreboard: The Saskatchewan Roughriders, James and Marie Mann, Mike Prosofsky, Kaleb Freeden, Ryan Grindheim, Derek Libke, Troy Haroldson, Elance Steel, Darice Carlson and the town of Hanley.

Also, a huge thank you to our parents who have volunteered and helped out wherever needed (and especially Lisa Ashdown for coordinating the concession booth)!!

SEE YOU ON THE FIELD IN THE FALL OF 2014!!

Chemistry has been a busy class filled with many different concepts, such as thermodynamics, equilibrium, and reaction

rates. In Pre-Calculus, we have been working on understanding trig identities, and the Workplace 30 class has been learning about geometry. The IA class has been working very hard on perfecting their individual projects; they all look amazing! The Home Economics class has been spending their

time working on knitting, crocheting, and sewing for their individual projects; they are coming together quite nicely. The first round of Work Ed is coming up soon; we wish all the grade 12’s a great experience with possible careers in their future. Good luck!

Finally, the class is just finishing their first volunteer assignment and is looking for volunteer opportunities so that they can provide 5 hours of service each to the community during this term. Lastly in robotics we are building and testing circuits.

From the Office

We seem to be enjoying some favourable fall weather this month – and I don’t hear anyone complaining about it. It’s also given us an opportunity to see a few projects completed around the school yard. Just as an update, the playground equipment was straightened out after some frost heaving had pushed a few of the posts up, and some more pea gravel was added to the area. We also had a storage building next to the outdoor court resided and a general clean-up of the yard took place. The football shed received some finishing touches and the new scoreboard was raised and powered up. What a great environment for students to play and enjoy their school and school yard!

Our School Community Council is in the process of finishing off this year’s order for the Hanley Community Calendar. If you’ve been missed and would like to have your name on the order list, please call the school and talk to Mr. Tucker or Mr. Anderson.

The week of Oct 21-25 is a busy one. Bus Driver Appreciation Day is on Monday, Oct 21. Hanley Composite School is hosting our fall Tri-Conferences on Tuesday and Wednesday night from 5:00-7:30pm. Please call the school to book an interview time with your son’s/daughter’s teachers and bring along your student as well for a great interview experience focusing on behaviours. Progress Reports will be sent home on November 15th for grades 1-12.

Tuesday, Oct 22nd will also be busy as the School Community Council is sponsoring our annual Meet the Staff BBQ. Everyone is invited to drop in for a burger and cake, and we invite you to take time to visit with the staff and the SCC members as well.

If that wasn’t enough going on Tuesday, I wanted to bring to your attention that the Saskatoon Health Region will be holding a Flu Immunization Clinic in the gym from 3:00-7:00pm.

Some slow but steady progress is also happening in the planning of the renovations for our Practical and Applied Arts programs. The two PAA areas should see a facelift this year as PSSD continues its work throughout the division investing funds in the updating of its PAA facilities. Plans will also include new equipment and a selling/auctioning off the old equipment being replaced. For more information if you’re curious, you can contact the teachers, Mrs. Burgess and Mr. Tyndall.

We’ll be taking the grade 11s and 12s to the See Your Future Education and Career Fair on November 5th in Saskatoon. If you can find time to talk to your student between now and that day, ask them about what career plans they’ve been considering to get them thinking about it before that Tuesday.

That’s all for now. For further information and updates from the students and classrooms, check out our school website at http:// blogs.spiritsd.ca/hanley/. As always, Mr. Anderson and I would love to talk to you if you have time to drop by the office or give us a call. Talk to you soon.

Grade 10 News

Well, the grade 10’s are one month in and lamenting all those lost summer days! Or they would be if they had a spare moment, anyway. In Cabinet Making, they’re already done their frames and are working on Crowns and kickboards. Commercial Cooking has already seen a few fine meals served to staff and students, and the kids have completed the Food Handlers Course as well as going on field trips to Earls and City Hospital. In Math, there was a collective groan as they found out how many deductions would be coming off of their paychecks (we’re doing financial math) when they’re employed full time. In Wellness, the focus has been on Personal Fitness for Life. In ELA, the earnest youngsters have been doing a bunch of creative writing and examining the mysteries of the unknown, like where the second sock goes when only one comes out of the dryer… Freaky. In science, they’ve just finished a major project on Ecological Sustainability and have been talking about population dynamics. And finally, in Driver’s Ed, they’re scaring us all. Have a great month!

Grade 3 & 4 News

Hello Again!

Has one month flown by already?? I hope you all enjoyed a relaxing Thanksgiving and got to indulge in a little turkey or at the very least some tasty pie!

This month has been full of a variety of things including multiple PD Days, many sick days (had by almost everyone!) and even laser eye surgery for myself! But let me get you up to date on what has been happening in some of our subject areas. In ELA, we are continuing work on a unit called “My Friends and I”. In Math, both Grade 3 and 4 classes are taking a deeper look into place values and number sense. In Science, we are still investigating what makes a structure and have even taken a stab at building some structures of our own! In Social Studies, we have moved on from looking at our world to now learning all about Saskatchewan. Tin Arts Ed., this class loves to express their creative energy through drawing, colouring and other fun Arts Ed. projects we have completed.

We continue to enjoy coming to class each day and now that most of us are over our beginning-of-the-year colds, we can spread our excitement for learning without spreading our germs!

Stay tuned for information coming home this week on a Grade 3/4 Halloween party that will be planned by a few of our high school students. A slight cost to cover meal expenses will likely be charged but I will send home the information as soon as it comes my way.

I hope you take some time to enjoy the last bit of fall weather before the snow comes!
Miss Adelman

Grade 1 & 2 News

What a great autumn; I can’t believe that October is half over already! Hopefully everyone can make it out to the “Meet the Staff” BBQ on Tuesday, which kicks off our student, parent, and teacher conferences for the fall. Please remember to contact Mrs. Block in the office to book your conference time with your child. It would be nice to see everyone there!

Just a reminder that the Halloween parade will start at 1:00pm on the 31st if you were interested in coming to watch. We will start getting the kids in their costumes around 12:45pm.

The students are very excited about learning and have settled down into our class routines. In math, the grade one’s are learning about numbers to twenty with Mr. Woods-Fehr, while the grade two’s are learning about numbers to one hundred with me. In ELA, we are about halfway through reviewing the alphabet letters and sounds with the grade one’s. I hope to finish this up in the next month or so and then they will begin spelling with the grade two’s. The two’s have done awesome with the spelling program so far. We are starting to talk about making connections as we read, so that is something that you could also focus on at home. Please remember to review the weekly sight words for grade one’s as it helps reinforce what we are learning at school. We are continuing to talk about safety in health, the senses in science, as well as belonging in our world for social studies. As always, please feel free to pop in or send me a message if there are any questions or concerns that may arise. I look forward to seeing everyone next week at the BBQ!
