The Grade 9 class has been hard at work, making a final push towards the Christmas holidays. They have continued to study Norse and First Nations myths in English class. In Social they are just rapping up their unit on Societies and Worldview. They have just finished learning about Linear Equations and Graphing in Math. In Science, they have continued to learn about Atoms and Compounds and in Art they have been working hard on their bands. They have been working their way through “The Real Game” which has been teaching them about life after school. The students have continued to enjoy Home Ec. and IA where they have been working on their welding, small engines, and sewing skills. Lastly, they have just began their basketball unit in Phys. Ed.

In gym they’re shooting baskets,
In science it’s Chemistry and Wildlife has them studying Lakes and fish and trees!
It hurts, you know,
To stub your toe
While trying to avoid the mistletoe
Why are there no kids named Stanley?

Grade 11
In Phys Ed 20, we went on a field trip to rock climb and play billiards. In English/ History, we are reading Animal Farm and comparing it to the Russian Revolution. In Physical Science 20, we are looking at different chemical reactions and gearing up for stoichiometry. In Health Science 20, we are analyzing our ideal fast food meal and the nutritional value (or lack thereof) behind it. In Math Foundations, we are learning the quadratic formula. The Grade 11 Class would like to wish everyone a VERY, MERRY CHRISTMAS and to keep safe and warm during the holidays. See you in 2016!
Grade 12
The grade 12s are working hard before their much deserved break. As the semester is coming to a close, there have been assignments due and tests to complete. Our social studies class is in the midst of a unit on the settlement of the Canadian West and the various historical events that accompanied this era. In particular, we are evaluating how this time period is remembered by historians. ELA 30 has finished reading Sgt. John Wilson and have a literary analysis essay on the novel due before the break. After the break, the students will be reading numerous texts in preparation for the final exam. Miss Smith and her PAA section are finishing sewing hooded sweatshirts, while Mr. Tyndall has the students working overtime on projects in the shop. The biology class continues their study of genetics. Mr. Herman and the precalculus math group are finishing a unit on trig identities. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas! Hope you enjoy the holidays and time spent with family.
From the Office
We’ve been pretty fortunate this winter with the El Niňo effect and we’ve been enjoying the break from the tough winter weather we’re known to receive in December other years. Last week we enjoyed our Christmas Family Fun Night as well. I was surprised and very pleased we got to set up another eighty or so chairs from what were already set up. It was once again a wonderful evening for the students and their families filled with singing, time for activities and an opportunity for everyone to stop and catch up with other families and friends in what is always a busy time of year. Thanks for attending if you were able to be here.
Plans have again been under way for a while to have our annual Christmas Dinner on Friday. Miss Smith has the event organized and jobs are in hand for everyone here, including the high school students who are always expected and expecting to take part. Thanks again to everyone for your food and various contributions that make the day and the lunch a good time for everyone. We’ll again have some School Community Council Members, and some School Division members in attendance as they always enjoy these kind of student days at Hanley Composite School.
This month starts some changes in our staffing again. We’ll be needing to say good-bye to our one intern, Miss Vanderpost. Thanks for all your work and planning and preparation and good luck with the remainder of your studies next semester! We’ll miss you.
Just a reminder that the Hanley School Community Council-produced Community Calendars are in at the office, and can be picked up any time. The cost is still $10 and it looks great. Thanks for all your support to the SCC as the funds raised are directly spent by the SCC on something for the school and students.
We’ll be back after the holiday with a short three weeks to finish off some units and prepare for final exams for high school students. Exams will fall in the last week of January, with a PD day scheduled for Friday, January 29th so teachers can work on marking finals and preparing grade 7-12 report cards set to go home on February 4th.

Hanley School K-6 Family Christmas Festival
WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 9th
Class performances begin in the gym at 6:00. Please drop your child off at their classroom by 5:45.
FAMILY ACTIVITIES ARE FROM 6:30-7:30pm

Raffle tickets for family fun baskets will be sold that night and draws will be made at 7:30. All proceeds towards funding elemen-tary events and field trips.
The SRC will be taking family photos to raise money for school events.
The SCC will be serving hot chocolate!
Kindergarten
And… another month flies by! November has been busy in Kindergarten. We have been working hard on the Early Years Evaluation, just right books, and our literacy workshop. This month was our first shot at sharing and it went very well. The theme was “something I made”. It was great to see (and sometimes taste) all of the homemade goodies and crafts that came from home! We have also recently received three giant cardboard boxes in our classroom. We cast a vote from student ideas and decided to make a castle, a bear cave, and a rocket ship! So far, our castle is up and running with peep holes, a working draw bridge, and a flag. The castle has been a hot-spot during play and explore time. What fun!
Grade 2
Hello, not much has changed in the grade two class this month! We are very excited for our field trip to the Forestry Farm, Montana’s, and Flip Gymnastics on Thursday! The kids have been counting down for a while now! In math, we are continuing with our unit on numbers to one hundred, which will probably take us to the Christmas break. For ELA, we have been working on four out of the five Daily 5 choices: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, and Work on Writing. Our last Daily 5 choice is Word Work/Spelling which I will introduce shortly. We will probably have one or two spelling lessons before Christmas, then start full swing after the New Year. We have also started to write friendly letters for our Writer’s Workshop. Our first letter we are writing is to Santa Claus! We have also been working on blends and digraphs for phonics to help us with sounding out words as we read and write. We are still working on our Healthy Body unit for health, Communities for social studies (it’s a long one!), and are just wrapping up our Animal unit for science.
Grade 1&3
The 1&3 class have had an amazing November! We have been working on making different types of connections to the stories that we read. The students have learned that they can make connections to their own life, to other books and to events that have happened in the world. The grade 1s continue to work in their writing books everyday and are beginning to write extended stories on the books that we read as a class. The grade 3s are working on identifying the 5 Ws (who, what, when, where and why) and are creating their own newspaper article. In math the grade 3s are about to finish their unit on numbers to 1000 where they are learning to count money and estimate. The grade 1s are still on their unit of numbers to 20. In social studies the grade 3s have started their country project and they are discovering that people live differently all around the world. The grade 1’s have completed their ‘Me on a Map’ project where they identified which planet, continent, country, province and town they live in. The grade 1s are about to start learning about mapping and are going to get a chance to create a map of our classroom. In science the grade 1s are learning about the five senses with Miss Buchinski. In art the students have been working hard. We created dot art with bats and ghosts and we made witch legs with watercolours for Halloween. We have started our unit in music. We are learning about soft and loud sounds, pitch, rhythm, and First Nation’s traditions in music and dance. The students are looking forward to our field trip to the Western Development Museum!
Grade 4-5-6
The snow has arrived! In the grade 4,5,6 room the students are just starting new units in Science and Social Studies. The grade 5’s just finished a unit in math and will be starting a new one. The new unit is multiplying and dividing of whole numbers. For all grade 5 and 6 students, I am asking that you are helping them to review their multiplication facts at home. It is a need for the students to know their facts automatically. It is much easier for them to complete their assignments.
