Grade 5 & 6 News

In the grade 5/6 classroom we are currently starting a writing unit in ELA. In Science we are learning about flight. In Social Studies we are going to begin a unit about government. In Math we are finishing up a big unit about fractions, decimals, percent, rate and ratio and will begin a much shorter unit in geometry. In art we are going to be learning about percussion instruments.

Grade 5 & 6 News

I hope everyone had restful February break. The grade 5/6 class is currently working on literature circles with the main focus on black history and slavery. In Science we are learning about flight, past and present. In Social Studies we are comparing Canada to other European countries. We are continuing to learn about the harmful effects of smoking in Health. We have just begun a unit about music in Art. The grade 6’s will be going on their first team building field trip with the Dundurn grade 6’s on Friday March 6.

Grade 5 & 6 News

I think winter is officially here. We have begun some new units in all courses. In ELA we are learning about Peace, doing some grammar, a little poetry and continuing on with our word study spelling tests. In Math the grade 5’s are focusing on multiplication and division. The grade 6’s are just finishing a unit about whole numbers. In Science we are learning about simple ma- chines. We are beginning a unit in Social Studies where we look at a variety of locations around the world. In Art we are doing a little drama and will be learning a bit about music. Please continue to have your children work on their multiplication tables. We would love to have everyone in the class knowing to their 11 times tables by Christmas.

Grade 5 & 6 News

During the month of October, the grade 5/6 class will continue to learn about the First Nations and how Canada has become a multicultural nation. As a class we will be going outside with Mr. Anderson to learn about building fires and how the First Nations lived long ago. We will be cooking bannock over the fire and enjoying a delicious snack. In ELA we are learning about heroes and what makes someone a hero. We have begun new units in both grade 5 and 6 math. We are learning about place value and whole numbers. In Science we are finishing up a unit about the Solar System. The students are presenting information about planets as well as vehicles built for space. In health we are learning about choices, decisions and setting goals. I hope to see you and your child at the Tri-conferences that are coming up.

Grade 5 & 6 News

The grade 5/6 class is very excited to go on a field trip on May 22. We are going to the Canadian Light Source, it should be very exciting. In ELA we are working on writing skills. In Social Studies we are currently learning about some early explorers. In Science we are just wrapping up an electricity unit and will be learning about weather next. We have been learning a lot about music by learning how to play Boomwhackers. In Math the grade 6’s are finishing up a unit about fractions, decimals, percent and ratios. The grade 6’s will also be going to Moose Jaw with the Dundurn grade 6’s on June 4th. There will be a newsletter sent home shortly about it.

Grade 5 & 6 News

The grade 5/6 class has been very busy doing labs about matter and labs about flight. We have really enjoyed making ob- jects fly as well as making and eating ice cream. We will be finishing up these units after the break. We will start learning about electricity in Science. In Math the grade 6’s will be starting a unit on decimals, fractions and percent. In Art we will be starting a unit about music. We will be finishing up our unit about power and authority in Social Studies and starting a new unit about dynamic relationships.

Grade 5 & 6 News

The grade 5/6 class is sure enjoying the break in the cold weather. We are currently working on independent novel studies as well as a Flight unit in ELA. In Math the grade 6’s are working on a Geometry unit. The grade 5’s are finishing our multiplication and division unit and will begin measurement next week. In the measurement unit we will measure and record perimeter, area and volume as well as design rectangles with a given perimeter or area. In Social Studies we are learning about Power and Authority. In Science we are studying matter. We will be doing quite a few experiments throughout the unit.

Grade 5 & 6 News

The grade 5/6 class is excited to have one of the interns in our classroom to do some teaching. Her name is Miss Fransoo. In ELA we have started a unit about peace and are reading the novel Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. In Social Studies we are learning about countries in Africa and how countries can have a dependence on one another. In Science we are finishing up Diversity of Living Things. We have done some labs and investigations throughout the unit. The class is going to be learning about drama in Art class. In Health we are learning about decision making and the steps used to make the best decision possible for ourselves. Enjoy the beginning of the winter season.

Grade 5 & 6 News

As the school year is underway the grade 5/6 class is in full swing. We are about to wrap up our ELA unit about messages. As a wrap up project we are asking the students to create their own photo messages. I can’t wait to see what they come up with. We have been learning about classifying living things and have done an observation/investigation with some meal worms in Science. In Social Studies we have learned some map skills and are going to be reviewing about Multicultural Canada as well as how the world is connected. In Health we are focusing on Healthy lifestyles and promoting a healthy choices. In grade 6 math we are about to wrap up our first big unit with whole numbers. I can’t wait to meet and see you .

What a beautiful start to a new school year. In the grade 5/6 room we are diving into a lot of things. In ELA we are learning about Messag- es. In Social Studies we have been studying maps about Canada and around the world. We are observing several living things in Science. Healthy lifestyles is the focus in Health. We are staying active in Phys. Ed. with a variety of games and activities. When we can get out and observe the world around us, we will take the opportunity to do a bit of learning outside the classroom.
