Lake Vista School Parent Night Thursday November 28, 6:00-7:45pm

Lake Vista SCC is proud to present 45 minute workshops to help caregivers better understand three areas of concern identified in last year’s Parent Engagement Survey.  All workshops are free and pre-registration is not required.  Each topic will be presented twice during the evening.

Session 1 – 6:00-6:45

Session 2 – 7:00-7:45

1. Lake Vista Family Math – presented by Chad Williams, Clavet Composite

Are you uncertain how to help your child with mathematics? Confused about what your child is doing in today’s math classes? In this session we will a have deeper look into the “NEW” math and discuss ways you can help support your child and school with mathematics.

2. Kids and Device Use: Learning Alongside Families – presented by Jill Paulsen, Vice-Principal,  Hague Elementary School

How much screen time is OK for my kids? What social media apps are my kids using? How did I keep my kids safe online? What’s the impact of media violence on my kids? Join us for an interactive session on device use and kids, where we will explore these big ideas: screen time, social media use, privacy and online safety, learning with technology and violence in the media.  Please bring a device (phone, tablet) that has access to wifi and has a QR scanner app installed.

3. Children’s Mental Health – presented by Rachel Subchyshyn,  M.Ed (Psy); CCC, Lake Vista School Counsellor

Frequent and sometimes contradictory information coming from the news, online media sources, friends and family about the hazards confronting our kids today cause many parents to feel confused about what to believe and how to best support their kids.  Please join us for a short presentation that identifies challenges kids face, the context for mental health, protective factors and highlights some ways we can come alongside our kids and help them through tough times.

These workshops are for parents only.  Free childcare will be available at the school for parents planning to attend.  Please email SCC_vicechair@icloud.com to book your childcare in advance.

Christmas Shoebox

The student leadership team of Lake Vista Public School wanted to gift children who are less fortunate this Christmas season. We are going to help pack shoeboxes for an initiative called Operation Christmas Child with the Canadian Relief Organization called Samaritan’s Purse.  We have till Monday December 2nd to fill some shoeboxes and spread some joy this Holiday Season!

Each class has been encouraged to help and will receive minimum one shoebox to fill with toys for a boy or girl. Here are the instructions for each class:

1. Get a shoebox from school.
2. Decide whether you will pack a box for a girl or a boy, and the age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Put a label on the box (printed from school).
3. Fill it with little gifts (nothing gently used -for hygiene reasons), including school supplies items, soccer ball with pump, stuffed animals, trucks, dolls, non-liquid hygiene items like toothbrush, combs, bar of soap, etc…for a full list, see below. No army related items, no liquids/lotions, or candy.
4. Lastly, $10.00 is needed for each box for shipping costs.

If your family would like to go above and beyond to help Lake Vista School out, you are more than welcome to fill a regular sized shoebox at home. All shoeboxes will be picked up and taken to Calgary by the afternoon on Monday, December 2nd.
