Bike and Pedestrian Safety

We’re noticing an exciting shift in student transportation, with a marked increase in families choosing walking and biking as a mode of getting to school each day! It’s awesome to see!

With the increase in students biking and walking to school, we have done some additional safety planning; the bus zone can be a busy place at the beginning and end of the day, and not all drivers are used to keeping an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists.

Students are reminded…

Upon arrival:

  • pedestrians and cyclists will enter through the east gravel entrance (the one near the tipi and cement barricade)
  • at the cement barricade, they will dismount–we are in the process of moving the bike racks to this area so students can park their bikes
  • they will stop at the bus zone—if there is a bus in the zone, students will wait until the bus is stopped and the bus driver waves them across

At dismissal:

  • pedestrians and cyclists will exit at the east of the buses, stopping to the left of Leanne’s bus and waiting to be waved past by Leanne
  • they shouldn’t start biking as buses are departing the school (they should either leave prior to buses leaving or after buses have all left the area.

In addition, we want students to be safe as they bike between home and school, so require all students to have a bike helmet and to follow the rules of the road: https://sgi.sk.ca/bicycleriders

We’re loving seeing the SCP “bike gang” and walking crew ready to hit the road at the end of each school day!

Please continue to watch out for students on our roads, in our parking lot, and keep the bus zone free of other vehicles before and after school.

Thanks for helping keep our children safe!
