Bullying

The PSSD Student Harassment Protocol.

Definition: A person is bullied when he/she is exposed repeatedly over time to negative actions on the part of one or more persons.

1. Bullying is intentional
2. Bullying is an attempt to inflict injury or humiliation
3. Bullying may be physical, verbal, social, or psychological

Examples of bullying include but are not limited to the following.

1. Physical- hitting, spitting, pushing, kicking, stealing, threatening, tripping, taking objects from someone, not adhering to the hands off policy.
2. Verbal- insults, rumors, teasing, name-calling, put-downs, swearing, lying, ridicule
3. Social- exclusion, public humiliation, notes, graffiti
4. Psychological- dirty looks, body gestures, rolling eyes, facial expressions

Parent Responsibility

1. Know and support the school’s policy on Code of Conduct and Bullying
2. Learn about bullying behaviours and discuss these with your child
3. Encourage non-aggressive ways of resolving conflict
4. Inform the school if bullying is suspected
5. Watch for signs of distress in your child
6. Advise your child to tell their teacher or principal about bullying incidents
7. Report bullying incidents to the administration
8. Participate in school meetings if your child has been involved in a bullying incident

Student Responsibility

1. Refuse to be involved in an act of bullying
2. Speak out against bullying
3. Report incidence of bullying or suspected incidence of bullying to a parent, teacher or the administration
4. Get help from an adult
5. Participate in school bullying programs of awareness when possible

Staff Responsibility

1. Understand and prompt the intent of the school’s code of conduct and bullying policy
2. Be role models in words and actions
3. Be observant of signs of distress or suspected incidents of bullying
4. Be prompt and visible while supervising students
5. Raise awareness amongst pupils about bullying behaviours
6. Listen actively to a student-reported incidence of bullying
7. Intervene quietly and calmly to incidents of bullying and misbehaviour
8. Deal with bullying incidents quickly
9. Report bullying incidences to homeroom teachers and the administration
10. Support and promote initiatives and programs in the school to combat bullying
